AIPG Illinois-Indiana Fieldtrip to Indiana Dunes
Late Wisconsin to Recent Depositional History of the Indiana Dunes: Shoreline and Dune Behavior in Response to Lake-Level Change and Man-Made Influences
What: This fieldtrip will travel from west to east across northwestern Indiana, examining coastal and eolian landforms between Miller and Michigan City. Discussions will include the development of beach ridges in response to quasi-periodic lake-level change, dune development during the late Holocene, vibracoring, optically stimulated luminescence dating, ground penetrating radar, and unexpected hazards in an active dune. The only strenuous part of the trip is a hike to the top of Mount Baldy using a park service trail.
Meet: Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education, 100 North Lake Street, Gary, IN 46403
Vehicles: After meeting up at the Paul H. Douglas Center we need to create a caravan to keep the total number of vehicles below 10.
Gear: Hiking boots required. Weather-appropriate gear recommended. Pack your own lunch!
Fees & Registration: AIPG will not charge for this event. National Park entry fees will apply for all cars in caravan. Participants will be required to sign a waiver.
